Factionalism Lulz

Tuesday, 10:09 am in World of Warcraft

… Okay, this isn’t usually the kind of thing I post about but it was too good to resist a private retort.

So hanging around the Info wow_ladies and there’s this chick who’s got a BC Beta invite and whatnot and likes to post long, rambling ‘updates’ on the content.

Anyway, it all started with this comment:

For 7000 years no one saw Night Elves or knew they existed. Now, suddenly in the last 5 years Night Elves have re-emerged to fight the Burning Legion… and the High Elves just sort of shrug the Kaldorei off. […] Someone please explain this.

Quoted From: tigrise

Much hilarity ensured when I dared to start to mention that there is a correlation between the Night Elves’ new-found mortality and the fact that every single cannon character that we’ve seen is either arrogant, xenophobic or ruthless, and that living in an unchanging society for ten thousand years has both corrupted the race and given them an overblown sense of their own importance.  Play through the Night Elf campaigns from Warcraft III and I thought this was pretty well implied; read through other WoWniverse material it’s at various times outright stated.  The Night Elves are a ‘good’ race, for what it’s worth, but that doesn’t mean tha they don’t have problems; just like the Humans (xenophobia, hubris), Orcs (bloodlust, demon influence), Trolls (cannibalism, barbarism), Blood Elves (hubris, demon influence, ruthlessness) and Forsaken (genocidal plans).  Except the discussion wasn’t about those races, it was about the Night Elves.

At no point did I call them perfect or saintly. Your taking this whole conversation very personally, and need to take a step back when I was trying to simply clarify and expound on lore. I was providing a contrasting viewpoint and correcting lorepoints, not slamming the might horde with lawlNelflore. Remember people who play Night elves are people too. Then some, like me, play both… Microsoft and Apple, Burgerking and Macdonalds, Alliance and Horde.

Quoted From: tigrise

Coming from someone who then not only locked the thread but did not provide a single piece of evidence contrary to my point I think this is a bit rich.  I wasn’t even talking about players who play Night Elves, I was talking about how Night Elf canon characters are portrayed by Blizzard.

But it’s okay, because it all got cleared up:

The WOW universe is very rich and varied. All the races have flaws, history, drama, and even good points. A discussion on lore is good. Faction bashing is not.

Now, back to normal discussion and commentary, thanks. :)

So, lore discussion is okay so long as no-one dares to suggest your pet race isn’t picture perfect?  I don’t get it; how is this ‘faction bashing’?  What does that even mean (bashing players perhaps, which I wasn’t)?  My main is a Troll man; they eat people, practice ritual exposure on their children and have barbaric initiation rites.  I’m not getting upset if people point that out.  So why get so precious over the NElves?

I just don’t understand people sometimes.

So, it looks like we’re not going to be able to get anyone to ship out two metal Nexen DDR mats to Australia.  Suxxor.

I don’t suppose anyone living in the US feels generous enough to act as a remailer for us?  Lesigh.

One of the guys at work bought me some “Kasugai Peanut & You” ‘ika piina’ snack things.  They’re peanuts rolled up in cuttlefish flavoured biscuit.  It sounds totally feral but they are delicious.  I can’t stop eating them!

Mmm, squidballs.

Before I offer my services of being your American proxy for these pads, have you tried to ebay them and ask the seller if they’ll send them to Aus?

And I post here instead of your LJ b/c for some reason when I try to comment the screen goes blank.  Odd.

Meh, I prefer people posting comments here. Makse me feel like I didn’t waste all those hours of coding for nothing. tongue.png

The pads are very, very large and quite heavy. I’m not sure that I’ve actually ever even seen them on eBay, and I’m guessing the reason we’re having trouble finding a US supplier to ship them to us is that the frieght is fairly prohibitavley expensive. angry.png

I’ll have a talk with ~Mat [h], but thanks for the offer. smile.png

    what!?

I think this ate my comment. If you get 2 doubles of this, I’m so sorry. crying.png

BOO I can’t comment on LJ for some reason. Won’t even show your post when I open up a reply window. What is that about. :<

Mreeeh I have issues with lore-ies from the WoW-verse. Blizz has actually gone back and *changed* their lore since WoW has become a smash hit. I don’t think they were prepared for so many people to become suddenly interested in races they hadn’t gone back and made EVERY PIECE of their background workable. sweatdrop.png

“My main is a Troll man; they eat people, practice ritual exposure on their children and have barbaric initiation rites…”
Out of curiosity, where is that information from…? I figured Darkspear didn’t do any of that, which is why they were booted from STV.

Yes and no. When Thrall rescued the Darkspear and absorbed them into the Horde they officially renounced their more barbaric troll customs.  But what gets said officially and what happens in reality are two different things, and various sources mention either obliquely or outright that some of the more ‘unsavory’ practices still go on.

They don’t come from STV, either incidentally. Thrall picked them up from an island (forget which one) en route to Kalimdor.  He saved them from, erm, witches or some shit and in gratitude they came with him.  Then Rexxar saved the poor trolls once again from the Echo Isles – where they’d originally set up shop – when Admiral Proudmoore came a-knocking.  The trolls moved to Sen’Jin shortly after, and WoW picks them up there.

Just thought of something.  Australia is closer to Japan than it is to US.  Do you think you’d be able to import it from there.  You could definitely save on shipping costs.  I’m pretty sure peripherals have no region code so it should work and if I’m not mistaken arrows for up, down, left and right are pretty universal. tongue.png
