Feminism is a Dirty Word
Monday, 2:50 pm in Politics & Current Affairs
Just got back from my politics lecture. Today was our postponed guest lecture on feminism. It was pretty good, I thought, though I’m glad I’ve studied Postmodernism and Australian Liberal/Republican political theory, otherwise it would have gone right over my head (like it did with most of the class, I think; bit of an advanced lecture to give to a pol101 class). But yeah…
She did some talking about the way Liberal1 theory has destroyed the legitimacy of feminism in the last 20 or so years by devaluing its importance and portraying anyone who desires female equality as an unrepresentative whinger. She had some good points about the way the conservative-driven free market economy has similarly destroyed activism; it’s no longer ‘cool’ to think, just shut up and consume.
There was also something interesting on the regulation of the female body under the Liberalist paradigm. (See! I use big words too! Thank you Penny!2) Liberalism is about government deregulation (i.e. government non-interference in the lives of businesses and individuals), and yet under our current conservative Liberal government, there are more regulations than ever before on women, especially with regard to their bodies (e.g. abortion, IVF, pornography and so on).
So yeah, interesting lecture. And since it was about Stuff I Understand, I get to show off in my next tutorial (again). Kekekekeke…
- This is Australian political Big-L-Liberalism, which has nothing to do with the American-pop-culture definition of ‘liberal’. Liberalism here refers to the downsizing of government, individualism and the free market, among others. ^
