Fire, shit and cream pies

This term in art is Modern Art Awareness Term, where we get to study everything from Dada on. Our latest assignment (which is due on Wednesday, and which I haven’t started) is a fake gallery catalogue on either an exhibitino of performance, conceptual or installation art. I’ve chosen to do Performance art because, well, it’s fun. Or funny. Anyway, we need three “exhibits” to talk about. This is easier said than done, since one big thing about performance art is it oftens tends to be guerrilla; and it’s not really the sort of thing you can tie down into an exhibit. I think I’m going to throw a Gilbert and George thing in there – since they were sone of the first folks to start doing performance art (though they tend not to do it anymore so much) – and see if I can work the Pieman (that guy who goes around and throws pies at famous people) and the Burning Man Project or something else famous in there. Studying performance art is sort of weird, because I’m not sure whether I should take it seriously or not. It’s one of those art-forms people tend to poo-poo as being, well, too weird; and with performances ranging from people shooting themselves to spending the day living like a pig to surprising people on the stree, it’s not hard to see why. Still, I think you need to be a special kind of lunatic to do performance art (as well as having extreme self confidence), so I have to respect it.

Even if it is kind of retarded.
