geurilla advertising

So I see that some movies are now using mods for FPS games (in this case Half Life) as part of their teen marketing package. It’s funny seeing this, coming on the heels of the last few weeks in PolSci learning about the commodification of ‘cool’; how global media empires like Sony and Disney ‘hype’ up movies so thouroughly, so that nowadays something becomes a ‘blockbuster’ simply because it’s marketed as such. It’s also interesting coming while reading Pattern Recognition by Wiliam Gibson (whom you may remember as the father of cyberpunk with Neuromancer), which is also about the commodification of cool (the main character is a ‘coolhunter’ for advertising agencies who has phobic reactions to brands such as Tomy Hilfinger and the Michelin Man).
I also notice they’ve bought to rights to make a movie of Hellboy, which means the movie industry is slowly working its way down into the alternative depths of the comic industry. The second we start getting movies of The Maxx or Sandman or (heaven forbid) any SLG stuff is the day I stop going to the movies (note: this is probably untrue). I mean Jesus; can you imagine the crap that Hollywood would do to a movie of JtHM? I can. It looks a lot like a slasher film without the witty bits. Ouch.
In other news, while walking to the unishop today I came to the comclusion that I am better as a (de)constructor of groups than a participant. I think it’s all those wanky polsci/postmodernism classes I had the misfortune of taking. Damn you Derrida!
