Well, have spent the last two days being more socially geeky than I think I’ve ever been. Saturday was spent at a LAN; watching
Mat play
Quake III, mostly. That was an interesting experience in geek social status.
Mat used to run the LAN up here, so he’s a member of the ‘oldschool’ (aka. ‘in’) crowd, along with the rest of the Three Letter Acronym and Headshot clans. Both TLA and HS’ games of choice are, of course,
Quake (with a dash of “Urban Terror” and
Warcraft III thrown into the mix). Mat, as I may have mentioned before, is reasonably good at first person shooters, and his reign of supremecy is possibly only challenged by Headshot’s Redback (aka. RedH0). I get to hear about the exploits of RedH0 and the boys from Headshot a lot, and I finally got to meet some (I was sandwitched in between Mat and Wayne ‘Acheron [HS]’ Ithinkispeltthatwrong). There were ten members of HS (plus BlackRose, a member of a Rockhampton clan who for these purposes counts as an honary member) and TLA all arranged up along one row of tables, with all the ‘n00bs’ spread out amongst the others. Some of the memoriable games of the night included:

• 2 x HS v TLA,
Quake III CTF (one to TLA and one to HS)
• HS v TLA + n00bs,
Warcraft III (HS was the victor by a long way)
• wombat [TLA] (aka. Mat) v RedH0 [HS],
Quake III (Mat won, I think, but not by a lot and in a slightly shafty way [Mat: Not shafty; by playing ‘smarter’ not ‘better’])
• Rabid Pig [TLA] (aka. Rabib Pig, aka. Mat’s brother) v RedH0 [HS],
Quake III (went to Redback, but Mat reckons he can train Mykel up to win)
• RedH0 [HS] v Fat_Arse_Wilson,
Quake III (watching Redback slaughter this kid was amusing, if slightly mean)
• wombat [TLA] v D’Gar,
Quake III (see above)
• Reback v the One Ring,
Lord of the Rings (always fun to play single player games at a LAN)
• A Whole Bunch of People Who Wanted a
Spider-Man Poster,
Quake III (Mat won over Redback – who was swearing blind both ways down a toad that he didn’t want the poster – but only by one frag in the last second of the game)
• TLA v TLA, “Urban Terror” CTF (with all the ‘way of the ninja’ knifing shit going on I’m not sure who won… or if anyone cared)
• HS + TLA v HS + TLA, “
Quake III Gridiron” (this is a really weird CTF-ish mod… again, no-one really won; it was mostly just mucking around)
• HS + wombat [TLA] v assorted n00bs and other players,
Age of Mythology (since there was no straife jumping and no guns, Mat and all the HS crew bar Acheron gave up after a while and left the game, thus allowing the n00bs to win)
• CPU + graphics card v
Doom III Alpha,
Doom III (while it was looking good for
Doom III, the definate winners had to have been the spectators… oh my god this is an amazing-looking game; I must have it!)
• wombat [TLA] v everyone else, The Who-Is-The-Biggest-Dickhead Competition (Mat shouted out ‘me’ and we won a pizza)

The LAN went from 9:00am to 12:00am the following day. It was fun, even if I didn’t have a computer and had to listen to Mat complaining everybody was always leeching off him (which is what happens when you share gigs and gigs of movies). I also did a reasonably good picture of Evil Ernie. Yay for me.

After all that LANning excitment, today we packed off once again at 9:00am and went to the Uni for a Magic tournament. I wasn’t really paying attention in the first part (Mat had a bit of a craptacular deck, oh well), but managed to get roped into playing the draft during the second half. A draft is kind of where everyone gets three booster packs and a group of 8 people (in our case 6) sit around a table and divvy up the cards to try and make a deck, then play with them. I made a mono-Black deck with lots of Zombies (I like Zombies) and came third overall (I only lost one round; one match to stupidity and another to a really whorey card). Everyone thought it was amusing, since Mat came fourth and Mykel didn’t rank (because I beat him). Apparently people here aren’t used to girls playing Magic. I dunno, it was okay when I was playing, but afterwards it was kind of the suck because everyone was being all surprised. I mean, it’s not like I’ve never played Magic before… I’m not too bad a player, I just haven’t picked up a deck in about four years. At any rate I won some cards (plus got to keep the stuff I pulled out of the draft), which I gave to Mat, who sold them, so I made $18. Yay me. Oh, I now also have an official Magic tournament ranking thigie. Hooray.

So yeah, that was my weekend. Tomorrow I sleep in… and maybe play with the new
DeadJournal account
Spug got me (yay Spug; I hope you feel better soon).

I really need a new computer.
