Mama Tol' Me Not to Come

Friday, 12:45 am in Archive
Let me tell you about my Exciting day; and excuse my typing, as it’s rather late and I’ve been drinking…

7:00am - Excitment #1, Bedding
As you may remember from the previous post, my bedding was wet from that day’s encounter with a thunderstorm which meant I’d spent a lovely night on the floor with only half my bedding. Because I’m nothing if not paranoid, I’d unplugged all the electrical equiptment (the idea of sleeping in live cables does not appeal to me) which meant I hadn’t set my TV to wake me up. Naturally, with everything noisy unplugged, I woke at my alarm and promptly fell back asleep for another hour. Sleeping in. I still made breakfast, though… or perhaps I didn’t end up going; I don’t remember now. Anyway, since my shoes were still wet, I had to wear my new shoes – this gets important later. The bus I needed to catch into Uni came at 9:40, and I almost missed it thanks to the Internet and my attention span of one minute. I eventually got there, however, which brings us to…

9:50am - Excitment #2, Computer Science
Upon arriving at campus, I had to find something called ‘40.HOPE’ (the Hope Theatre in building 40), for my introductory lecture to CompSci. Since I’d left my map at home after leaving in such a rush I wandered around slightly lost for a while before asking a Some Guy who had a map and looked just as lost as I did for help. Turned out that the Some Guy was also doing CompSci and lived in the dorm room right next door to ours. His was also very tall; taller even than Matt and James (what is it with all these tall guys working with computers?). Anyway, I walked around with the GuyNextDoorJosh for a few hours while we went and half paid attention to Some Lecturers talk about how great we were for choosing CompSci (the “best faculty in the university”), then got some lunch before heading home. There I tried to help him (unsuccessfully) to connect his computer the the ‘Net. While this was going on, however, my shoes were rubbing against my right foot something dreadful, giving me a wonderfully nasty blister. My ug boots came in handy back at the campus, but I soon had to replace them with real shoes to trek off to…

2:40pm - Excitment #3, Law
This time I didn’t almost miss the bus; instead I arrived almost an hour too early thanks to me mis-reading the timetable. Unfortunatley, this also meant I was 20 minutes late for the start of my Law introductory lecture, had to sit on the floor, could see jack-all and met nobody new. By the time I got home, my feet were killing me.

5:30pm - Excitment #4, Dinner
Dinner would have been better if I’d remembered to pick up some lemon for my fish. Sans-lemon, it tasted like rubber. On the plus side, I had someone to talk to as I sat with RoomMateJulie and DownstairsCanadianPostGradSeema. I also got ice-cream. Afterwards, we went upstaird, ate jellybeans (Julie’s) and giggled. We also took photos for our door. Now, tonight’s social calendar included a trip to the UniBar and this time I allowed myself to be dragged along. Dreading another outing in the Evil Shoes, I put on the Wet Ones instead, and we all headed out.

7:45pm - Excitment #5, The Bar
The UniBar was deserted when we got there. It was nice; I could deal with that, sitting there quietly with Julie and Seema. No worries mate. People began pouring in at about 9:00pm and I was shown off to various numbers of Julie’s friends; apparently I’m quite well-known as “Oh, the Room Mate, right?” And got various tips about my degree, as well as listened to everyone rant and rave about how all the “damn first-year’s” (apparently you can tell them by their white belts with the double rows of holes) were taking over our bar. Or their. Or whatever. Apparently, however, I had “potential”, and thus was allowed to stay. I’m quite used to being only mildly interested in social situations – which is exactly what I was – but Seema was practically falling asleep. We eventually decided alcohol was in order, so we stood in a crowded bar line for ten minutes to get disgustingly sweet drinks (mine of which is still making me sick). Eventually, boredom set so far in that we decided to just go home.

11:00pm - Excitment #6, The Long Road Home
Never take shuttle bus directions from a drunk person. There was a bus – or so we were assured – that would take us right back home… we just couldn’t work out where it came from, so instead we decided to follow the sign to the North Wollongong Train Station. Of course, neither of us could remember the way Julie went on the way to the bar, so buggered if we could find it by ourselves, in the dark. Eventually we ran into the Scary Guy With the Stolen Marshmallows and Seema asked for directions to the train station. We were quite nervous when he seemed to insist on taking us there himself. The good thing about being in a University Town, though, is that it’s crawling with students, and we eventually encountered two more Not-So-Scary Quasi-CompSci-Lecturers With Nice Shirts and followed them the rest of the way. Apparently one hangs around CSCI204, so I might meet him again next year under more favourable circumstances.

We got to the station, but buggered if we could work out the tickets. Eventually we asked the Girl on the Platform what to do and she told us not to bother; no-one was going to check our tickets at 11:30 at night. The train came ten minutes after that. Now, the Girl on the Platform was talking to the Girl From the Slums (one of the blocks here at CE) who I recognised from the trip to the uni earlier in the day. So I asked her if she could lead us back to CE and she did so quite admirably, which is why I’m now here, and not still wandering around Wollongong somewhere.

That – to put it mildly – was not only fucking stupid but unbelievably fucking scary too. I’m never, ever doing anything like that ever again for as long as I live. That’s the absolute last time I let myself be dragged out socialising.

At least until Seema and I go down to Sydney for Mardi Gras on Saturday…

God… you people are completley missing the point! It wasn’t fun; it was absolutley fuckin’ terrifying! Getting lost in a city you don’t know then being harassed down a dark street by criminals is not my idea of a fun night out. Jesus fuckin’ Christ…
