Mask

Saturday, 7:27 pm in Storytime

The beast had been… gone for a long time. It had simply vanished one day. Good riddance, she thought.

It wasn’t until days later that the once-God came back for her. He pulled her from her place beneath the beast’s bed and srranged her lifeless plush-and-plastic limbs on the dresser, amidst the sea of makeup and brushes and clips the beast never seemed to actually use. The once-God stroked her hair gently, tenderly, and leant close, bringing his pinned-back corpse-black lips close to her ear. Almost breathlessly, he whispered, “I know what… who you really are. Would you like me to tell you?”

Fear rose in the skullkitty’s throat, but cotton and stuffing could do nothing to stop the next whispered word.

Without thought, without feeling the skullkitty’s hooves rose unbidden to her face, hooking impossibly around the edges of her acid-bared skull.

She removed her face to, for the first time, display the mask underneath.
