Music Monday #3.6: Smallville
Monday, 3:05 pm in Music
You know what we haven’t done one of for, like, a million years? A Music Monday! It’s a public holiday today, so let’s kill some time by doing one of those now.
I still owe
randomredux a “Mayhem, Mischief and Destruction” themed post but, alas, this one isn’t going to be it. This is instead going to be the excruciatingly tedious “Five songs that remind me of Smallville”, mostly because of:
And I’m just not going to argue with that. Allez hop!
#26. The Killers, “When You Were Young” (video)
We’re burning down the highway skyline
On the back of a hurricane that started turning
When you were young
This is the stupid song that started it, and I blame Guitar Hero III. I’m just going to assume you can figure the rest out for yourselves.
#27. Plastic Bertrand, “Ça plane pour moi” (video)
Allez hop! T’occupe t’inquiete
touche pas ma planete
It’s not today
Quel le ciel me tombera sur la tete
et que la colle me manquera(Ok let’s go! Mind your own, keep your nose out
Don’t touch my planet
Today’s not the day the sky will fall down around my ears
Or that I will have to go without a drink)
This might seem a bit of an odd song to put on this list, but it’s here for two reasons. The first one – which I think I’ve tweeted before but for those of you who missed it – is that the backing tune, but not the lyrics, come from a song called “Jet Boy, Jet Girl” which, in a nutshell, is about a guy ranting that his boyfriend has left him for a woman. The chorus is “He gives me head”, which is ironically linked to the second reason this song is on my list, the translation of ça plane pour moi. Despite having been there twice, I know absolutely zilch about French, however some investigation has revealed that the translation for ça plane pour moi is monstrously idiomatic. Nevertheless, it’s usually taken to mean something along the lines of “this works/life’s/world’s for me”. However, because of the content of the rest of the song (a man lying in a gutter recounting a messy break-up) it’s probably a lot closer to something self-deprecatingly ironic like “tough shit for me”. The net result all this tangled web of hidden bitterness is that this song feel like Lex to me, hence it’s inclusion. Also, the song is seriously just fun.
#28. Sneaky Sound System, “UFO” (video)
And tell me this is all good? And you say, I don’t know
I’m very, very far from home
I must’ve heard this song about a zillion times before it hit me one Saturday morning in just the right wrong frame of mind for it to become another bitter-woobie Lexian ballad. Sneaky Sound System are an Australian dance act and while this isn’t their only track, it’s the only one I’ve actually heard. One hit wonder in the making? Only time will tell! Also, I’ve never actually seen the lead singer in anything other than a variation on that really awkward sack-dress with the waistband around the knees (q.v. video clip). Someone needs to let her know it’s really not as good a look as she seems to think…
#29. Motion City Soundtrack, “It Had to be You” (video)
They say that what doesn’t kill us makes us who we are
All this time and everything’s changed but I still feel the same
All good things eventually end and get washed down the drain
What a disaster it would be if you discovered that I cared
A little too much for friends but not enough to share
See, here’s the thing I really, really hate about music. ‘Cause, like, you can have this song, right? That you normally wouldn’t give a second thought to because, yanno, it’s kinda crap. Then – for no reason at all – BAM! You happen to pay attention to the lyrics and it gets itself attached to some ship or fandom (or, worse, something original1), usually for the lamest, most obvious reason and then suddenly you just… can’t stop thinking about it. Because you like he thing it’s attached to and so now suddenly you like this shitty song, as well. Does that happen to anyone else, or is it just me?
#30. Mika, “Happy Ending” (video)
If anything should happen, I guess I wish you well
A little bit of heaven, but a little bit of hell
This is the hardest story that I’ve ever told
No hope, or love, or glory
Happy endings gone forever more
OMG A SONG ABOUT A DYSFUNCTIONAL RELATIONSHIP? HOW DID THIS GET HERE? Along with “I Crush Everything” (a song about a kraken), this is about the saddest song about love I can think of off the top of my head. Oh Mika, you so skinny and curly!
So, there you have it. I’ve exorcised my head for the week and you’ve got some new music. Kudos all ‘round. One day I’ll go back to doing these on a regular basis. Anyone got any themes for me when I do?
- My average attention span for fandom is, honestly, somewhere between three and six months. My attention span for a original series is between three to twelve years. ^

Music for insomniacs? Music for cooking to? Dunno…
I’ve done a few mix CDs sporadically over the past few months - hopefully most of the themes are self-explanatory, or at least the song titles explain the postmodern semi-smartarse self-conscious irony of the theme. Oh yes.
I think this one is my favourite though. (001 - 013.jpg)
