Music Monday #3.7: Zombie Jesus Party!
Monday, 8:57 pm in Music
You know what this Easter long weekend needs more of? Music motherfucking Monday, that’s what! Zombie Jesus says let’s dance, man, yeah!
#31. The Presets, “My People” (watch)
Oh they’ll take all our ceremony
They’ll never
Find a happy hope for you
But know that’s not the only chance you’ll get, yeah you’ll see
I really shouldn’t be allowed to watch Video Hits in the morning because it makes me like songs like this one. I dunno, there’s just something about the thumping, almost dark beat…
#32. Spin Doctors, “Little Miss Can't Be Wrong” (watch)
Other people’s thoughts they ain’t your hand-me-downs
Would it be so bad to simply turn around?
You cook so well, all nice and french
You do you brain surgery too, with a monkey wrench
To say this song has no association with fandom to me is not entirely correct; it is a theme song, but it’s not a fandom theme song because – as far as I’m aware – I don’t have a fandom. That’s right, kids, in the same way I associate “Holy Fool” with Loki or “Torpedoes” with Evil Ernie… this is the song I associate with myself. I really could write some more about that but, yeah. What else is there to say?
#33. Bodyrox feat. Luciana, “What Planet You On?” (watch)
If you don’t wanna be my best friend then why am I still in your bed?
If you can’t stand the way I talk then why am I still here?
If we can’t work it out then how about gettin’ your stuff and moving out?
If we can’t be lovers again?
There’s so much about thing song that I just can’t stand and yet I can’t stop listening to it and it’s driving me insane oh gods save me please!
#34. Green Day, “Boulevard of Broken Dreams” (watch)1
I’m walking down the line
That divides me somewhere in my mind
On the border line
Of the edge and where I walk alone
Aah, Green Day. Truly the embodiment of “my music is better than your music”; if these guys had emerged in the last five years I would be treating them with the same vicious disdain I accord to bands like AFI but no! Because I remember Dookie when it came out they are instantly transported to nu-punk rock god status! All hail Green Day! Anyway, I was listening to this song idly the other day when I realised that it could easily be applicable to every story I have ever written. No, seriously. Fandom or original, apparently I always have a main character who fits this song. Loki, the entire crew of EtA?, Tara from UNIII+, Seifer from Futureloop, Evil from Aftermath, Sephiroth from Untitled 5, Midnighter, Lex from Déjà Vu… hell, even Kal from UIP fits this and that’s just scary. Man… talk about copy-paste characterisation. I… I think I need to go sit and stare at the wall for a while…
#35. Dead Kennedys, “Viva Las Vegas”
Viva Las Vegas
Turning day into nighttime
Turning night into daytime
If you see it once
You’ll never be the same again
I’ve totally been looking for a fast, heavy version of this song ever since I saw it in… a movie of some description. I think John Goodman was singing it, but I’ve never been able to find the recording I liked, and every other version I’ve heard has been… I dunno, missing something. And then – lo and behold! – the Dead Kennedys come along and save me. I pulled this one out of the end credits to Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. I knew that movie was good for something other than bad Smallville jokes!
So, there you go. I hope everyone had a happy Zombie Jesus Weekend, complete with mass consumption of brains chocolate. Until next time!
- Strictly speaking, “Are We the Waiting?” is the Easter song from the album American Idiot. Special Easter bonus? Sure:
Forget me nots and second thoughts live in isolation
Heads or tails and fairytales in my mind
Are we we are, are we we are the waiting unknown
The rage and love, the story of my lifeQuoted From: Green Day, 'Are We the Waiting?'
