Music Monday #3.9: Hottest 100 (Cut Mix)
Monday, 10:07 pm in Music
So the other day I ripped a copy of last year’s Triple J Hottest 100. So I figure that’s as good an excuse for a Music Monday as any, especially since coincidentally almost all my favourite tracks turns out to be Australian. Fun stuff! Let’s go.
#41. Gyroscope, “Snakeskin” (watch)
Staying here will only breed obsession, and I’m already obsessed.
If everything you see is your possession, then I’m already possessed.
Careful kid - this is not your song, although it could be before too long.
See, check it out! It’s not just the Americans who can make emo post-grunge rock! Yeah…
#42. Missy Higgins, “Peachy” (watch)
It’s not my fault
It can’t be my fault
That you speak to me the way you do
Now I’m split in two
I’m half me and half you
But I hate us both, don’t you?
This song is way, way way too cheerful for the lyrics (deliberately). It’s also totally my Dead on Arrival Loriah anthem. Ah, Loriah. The canon pairing that never was…
#43. bluejuice, “Vitriol” (watch)
And if you can’t shape up
Nobody wants you
Fuck the whole world
And what everybody’s sayin’ hey
Good luck and don’t dare give up
Give it a little bit of vitriol! (Hey!)
Don’t let yourself down
I must’ve seen the videoclip for this song about a jillion times on rage and kept kinda wanting to like it, but never quite making it. But scrolling through the album on the weekend the song finally managed to attach itself to one of the fenlinks in my head, thus the promotion to my playlist. Also: Semi-naked dudes groping each other on the album cover? Sure!
#44. The Panics, “Don't Fight It” (watch)
I left my heart in places
Forgot everyone of their faces
And tried to navigate a broken path
Of which I may have helped create
To say that I like this song is probably an overstatement. Unfortunately it got glued into those aforementioned fenlinks and as I’ve bitched about before, they essentially override any actual dislike of a song I happen to have. Unfortunately.
#45. Hilltop Hoods, “Recapturing the Vibe Restrung” (watch)
You’re a man of your word; you got nothing to say
I got respect for the scene and love for the place
Where I bled for my dreams and struggled for change
We’re still striving on, we’re still alive and strong
Right or wrong I’d still kill for where I belong
You know how every week there’s kinda this one song that I think everyone should download, even if they download no other songs? Well, this is this week’s. The Hilltop Hoods are an Australian hip-hop outfit, and before you all groan and run away I have to say I like Australian hip-hop quite a lot. It’s not like the glossy gangsta rap that’s all over the US charts; it’s much more raw and more like what hip-hop used to be back in the 1980s and 90s. Plus for some reason the Australian accent tends to come out much strong in hip-hop than other kinds of music, and I like that. But the one thing that makes this particular song mind-blowing is the fact that it’s a remix collaboration between the Hoods and composer Jamie Messenger, played out by the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra. That’s right, kids; you’ve heard orchestral pop and orchestral rock. This is orchestral rap. And fuck damn, do I love me some orchestral rap. (Also: The videoclip is hilarious.)
So that’s it for this week’s Australian music bonanza. Stay tuned for next week time, because I know how much everyone loves piracy. Y’arr!
Bonus Tracks
Okay, so I couldn’t actually cut this week’s offering down to five. So, here’s the bonus disk. Huzzah!
#45a. Faker, “This Heart Attack” (watch)
My heart stops it isn’t going could you revive me
I think I’m lost without knowing so come and find me
‘Coz in the same space we’re disconnected and in your own mind you’re not attracted
But in your own life over reacted and in your own time
This song, way overplayed much? Yes, I think so. And as the promo for Law & Order, too, for no discernible reason whatsoever. Also: Random veekay in the videoclip what?
#45b. Foo Fighters, “Pretender” (watch)
I’m the voice inside your head you refuse to hear
I’m the face you have to face mirroring yourself
I’m what’s left, I’m what’s right, I’m the enemy
I’m the hand that takes you down and brings you to your knees
Who doesn’t like the Foo Fighters? Really? You’re all fired! One of only two non-Australian tracks on the album I really like…
#45c. The Wombats, “Let's Dance to Joy Division” (watch)
Let’s dance to Joy Division, and celebrate the irony.
Everything is going wrong, but we’re so happy.
Let’s dance to Joy Division, and raise our glass to the ceiling.
‘Cos this could all go so wrong, but we’re just so happy.
… and here’s the other one. Despite the name, these guys are English and I just adore the dancing-at-the-end-of-the-world vibe of this song. In fact, I think I’d written the lyrics to the chorus down in the “to download” section of my notebook and then just… hadn’t gotten around to it. So it’s fortunate that Tripe J did it for me. Hooray for the J!
