My fish died.
He was fine and then I went away to Coolum for five days and I came back and he was lying on the bottom of the tank and the next morning he was floating vertically and by the time I got home today, he’d died.
I don’t know why.

Goodbye, Laucian. The tank just isn’t the same without you.

I’m sorry about the death of Laucian. Maybe it got sick? Are your other fish okay? -
Yeah, he was definitely sick, but the problem with fish is that it can be really, really hard to tell what’s wrong with them, and then even harder to treat it.
The most Occam’s explanation is that the Otos I bought the other week for the tank introduced some kind of pathogen. One of the Otos died within the first couple of days, though that’s not completely unusual (shock of the introduction; they’re delicate little guys). The two surviving Otos seem fine.
I inspected Laucian’s corpse a bit before I buried him; he had some white feathery stuff around his gills but I’m not sure if that indicated fungus/parasite or was just decay. Either way it’s a sad end for the poor little guy.

Now I’m not sure if I want to get another betta or go with something different, like a small school of neons or guppies. The bettas are nice, though; very personable fish. Which is kinda the problem; it’s sad when they go.

Sorry about Laucian
He had such beautiful colouring - that’s an amazing blue. -
I know! And it was completely different depending on whether you looked at him from the side or from the top.
Bah, my poor fishie.
