Rose-Tinted Bookwork

Tuesday, 6:36 pm in Life

I think sometimes we forget that we were kids once, not just smaller copies of ourselves. Reading some of the things that I scribbled down in my notebookswhen I was fourteen and I’m struck by the simple fact that they sound like exactly the things a fourteen eyar old would write. Exactly the sorts of things, in fact, that we tease netkiddies for doing right now. Suddenly I realise that all the hysterics ‘we’ used to try and deliberatley elicit out of, say, Kur seem so much more familiar now.

I mean, it’s still really funny to watch teenagers go off their heads on the internet, but it’s kind of a sobering thought to remember tht at the same age I used to do exactly the same thing.

I’m up to Year 10 now. I wonder what (say) Anna would think to know I still have a picture of Abra she drew in my English book all those years ago. Or that I have a whole page dedicated to a big scribble in texta saying “RUSSELL DO YOUR WORK!”, or that I have a whole bunch of pages in the back of my Year 8 science book working out by a process of elimination who was giving presents to who in the Secret Santa we did that year (I gave Judith some ten sided dice). A bunch of pictures Profile matt drew of ‘my room’ in an exercise in Myths, Legends and Fantasy. And then there’s the whole slew of teacher’s names; some I remember, some I don’t. Mystery Man from Phys Ed, who we called Mystery Man because he refused to tell us his name. Terrified straight-out-of-university kid that he was. That’s the other scary thing; the thought that a bunch of these teachers weren’t then much older than I am now. Kate and Angella especially.

On the other hand, it’s good to know that the fact that I was occasionally lazy in filling out my SoSE or Home Ec worksheets never actually impeeded me in later life. Remember that, kids, it’s a valuable lesson. (The only subject I think I’ve ever actually ‘used’ the knowledge of since High School was probably English, and even then just for the formations of how to write an essay and think analytically… and dialectically.)

I wouldn’t go back. Dusty old schoolbooks have rose-tinted pages.

Ever since that post I made about kids cartoons (kidz kartoonz?) the other day I’ve become addicted to playing Block Pop at the Trollz website. Shoot me before I hurt myself.
