Oh. My. Fucking. God.

So, those of you who actually give a crap and read this semi-regularly may note that I’ve been having a problem with my internet being really fucking slow every since I reformatted my computer. At first I thought it was something with my home network; despite moving from 512 to 1k ADSL my speeds didn’t seem to ever improve. I was having big problems with non-browser based programs that needed to connect to the ‘net (most notably eMule). No worries, thought I; see what it’s like at uni.

It wasn’t any better using the uni’s LAN proxy (since I likely won’t get my private ADSL setup for a while), which should be nigh-on instantaneous. So I had to bite the bullet and admit that it was something on my local machine. Then earlier I killed dad’s Netgear program he uses to manage our wireless network at home; bam! Instant re-speed.

Yah.

I hope that’s finally routed out the base of the problem (I used to think it was plugins for Trillian, but now I think Trillian might just have been jamming in this stupid Netgear program). Fingers crossed.

I’m somewhat glad that I seem to not be the only person getting this 403 error on long posts; ~starfyre [h] has reported it too. It seems to be something about data size in TEXT fields in MySQL, but I’ve never encountered the problem before, so I’m stumped as to the cause. ~braken [h], any ideas?

I ‘borrowed’ Knights of the Old Republic II today from EB (‘borrowed’ with a $90 deposit, because you can return things within seven days) because ~Mat [h] figures that with no ‘Net I’d be needing some games to play. Stupidly, however, I got the XBox version instead of the PC version. Then I go and find out it’s actually good (kind of like d20 meets Torment meets Final Fantasy), and that it’s probably worth keeping. So tomorrow it’s back to the ol’ EB to trade in the XBox for a PC version, because let’s face it; why the fuck would I want to play something on my XBox when I can play it on Bedlam. That’s what he’s there for, not to mention I apparently get a massive headache if I try and play games from further away than about a foot, a la my computer screen.

Speaking of Bedlam, I’m thinking of buying him a little bitch to run Apache and MySQL, since everyone (read: Dad and ~Mat [h]) complains that I run too many background processes. Of course, that would presuppose I have $700 lying around. So we’ll see.

First things first, though; phone, internet, textbooks, degree. Goddamn O-Week.
