Script Kiddy Artists Hissy Fit

Ah, you know, and maybe I should be quiet since it’s been a long time and all, but… I’m a programmer. I do computer science, I made this website (properley, in a language, not with pissy shit like HTML and JavaScript), I’ve worked at big websites (well, one, once). I say I know reasonably how things work…

Which is why shit like this makes me laugh. Lord knows I’m no fan of [dex=http://killzombi.deviantart.com]Zombi’s[/dex] (in fact, dislike of her was what got me drawing anthro in the first place) or most of her little group of over-reactive drama queens, but it doesn’t take a genius to work out that just because you stamp your feet and have a cry because people hate that you’re too ‘popular’ (read: a mean cunt) doesn’t mean you have the skill to set up your own art site.

Let’s get this straight; as a programmer, a webmaster, and a born-and-bred nerd, I know that this shit is not easy like wine and roses. Not if you want to do it properley (or, honestly, even at all). While programming is not particularly hard, per sei, it is an initially difficult skill to acquire. It’s also difficult to program well. Creating a site which includes file upload functions is even harder. for simple security reasons (ie. preventing people from using security flaws in your code to upload things like IRC spambots to your server; a reasonably common occurrence, just ask :userwyvernsmile.png, not to mention taxing on bandwidth and space.*

Ironically, I actualy have the beginnings of a VCL/dA style site hidden somewhere in my /web directory (the illustrious sk.art v0.0.1), but haven’t really worked on it ever since running across the problem of how, exactly, to have nice user URLs (ie. http://sitename/user).

Anyway… I guess it just reminds me about how unappreciative people are about things like dA/VCL or whatever. Lord knows I’m no great fan of VCL’s retarded art rules, but I’ll shut up and obey them while I’m there because I know I cost money and they’re providing me with a service I have no right to complain about. So…

I’m not really sure where I started on this. Oh well… guess it’s off to read that fascinating book on My Hero John Howard that needs to be back to the reserve collection by 10am tomorrow…

* The mathematics is simple: I have about 200 of my own images on this site (not including any of my hostees or the images/files which make up my site layout), which take up a little under 19mb, a site like deviantART has well over 1,000,000 ‘files’ (some of which are several megs in size); in other words, probably over 100 gig of stuff. In perspective, I only have about 120 gig of disk space on my entire computer (and my site can only host 500 meg). Not to mention the fact that every time someone views one of these files it takes bandwidth. A site like mine on a common-level server like mine has a bandwidth limit of 6 gig per month. If I were hosting dA, in other words, I’d be in trouble…
