Sickness and Ill-Health

”You know, I don’t think Australians like Americans as much as Americans like Australians…”

Such was the astute observation from some American students on the bus today. It made us all crack up into sniggers for a few good minutes. Never let it be said that I harp on a point (I do, but you don’t need to mention it), but the pair in question were referring to a lecturer who seemed to have done a bit of a public dressing-down of all the American students in her class. And… I dunno. That seems a bit harsh; which from me might sound a little weird, but still. I mean, there’s a difference between me dissing someone for the fun of stirring up a flame war and a teacher publicly humiliating some students (professionalism, before you ask). There is a general consensus here that essays by Americans aren’t up to par with essays from everyone else (which, from what I heard of the conversation, the incident was about), and that’s just a difference in the teaching system. A ‘paper’ is not an Australian-university-standard essay; they’re both totally different ways of writing. Anyway, I have no idea where I was going with this…

Yeah. Sickness. Have I mentioned my cold? It’s one of those annoying ones where the only symptoms are general tiredness, a runny nose and the tendency to break into violent coughing fits every so often, usually at the most inconvienient point in time (such as lectures). So I didn’t go to IGS tonight. I was going to, but then Mat and Kirky came to pick me up and I just felt shit. Leaving my room is not really an option; I can barely type straight, so apologies for my incoherence. Mat came and brought me dinner, though, which was nice. CE food is not very condusive to getting well…

But yeah, the ‘upside’ of being all sickly is that lethargy has given me a good excuse to go through all the DivX movies on the network. I accidentally submitted myself to the American version of Harry Potter yesterday, but made up for it by finally watching Dogma after a long resistance (if there’s one thing that’s good for the flu it’s five hours of Alan Rickman… mmm). Asides from the obvious (see previous brackets), Dogma contained a cameo by That Chick; I have no idea what she’s called, but she was the chick with the bowling ball in Mystery Men. I don’t like many actresses nowadays under the age of about 40, but I like her. Unfortunatley, all good done by those two films was undone when – in a fit of fever-induced delerium – I decided to watch Little Nicky, which looked to maybe have potential… but was not only shit but ruined my perfect record for avoiding Adam Sandler at all costs (and why people find that guy amusing is entierley beyond the scope of my knowledge). Anyway… after one failed attempt at attending a lecture this morning, I came home to watch Toy Story 2, South Park and Spaceballs, in that order. Nothing like light entertainment to make you feel better. I think I’ve got Memento on CD, so I’ll probably end up watching that next to gradually build up my tolerance to drama before braving A Clockwork Orange, which I feel the need to watch for mainly historic purposes (I don’t think I’m quite up to American Psycho just yet). There’s also Finding Forrester (for one line), The Exorcist and Swordfish floating around, as well as a whole bunch of crap which I don’t really want to see. Someone has Futurama though, so…

University networks; dens of stinking copyright violation. Just think, this is all pretty good for a girl with no VCR.- « Previous

Memento is a bit of a mindfuck - but it’s a really cool film. The UK DVD has a special hidden feature; where the film’s been re-edited so that it goes forwards; it might be on the Australian one too maybe.

A Clockwork Orange is cool too; gets a bit boring and slow in the second part of the film though.

Hurry up and watch them! Anyone for some synthemesc…?
