Welcome to Web 2.0
Wednesday, 11:51 am in Geeking
Okay, so as usual I’m late to the party but I finally found a use for all those micro-blog services I always sign up for and never actually use. The obvious thing would’ve been to integrate them into my blog’s sidebar like everyone else, except for the fact that the way my CMS handles templates makes this a bit hard (at least until I figure out a module API and, let’s face it, I don’t have the time any more and that’s just never going to happen).
But, lo! I remember that my custom pages interface is flat-file specifically so I could integrate PHP into it. As such, I’ve been secreting various feeds into sub-pages. The about me page contains my last five Twitter updates. I’ve decided I like Twitter mainly because I can post to it using my mobile phone, and that’s great for places where I really shouldn’t be posting at all. Like conferences and meetings.
… not that I do that, of course.
Ahem. Anyway, Twitter on the about page, last.fm on my bio, and my most recent del.icio.us links on the exit page. Huzzah.
I’ve also some some experimenting with mashing these all together into a ‘Lifestream’, though at the moment all it’s really doing is spamming music. Hrm…
Welcome to Web 2.0, Dee.
So last night I sat down with my spindle of DVDs totally intent on backing up all my crap in preparation to install Vista, mostly because I’m a sucker for punishment.1 After three Nero crashes (fuck you, Nero), I finally gave up when I tried to pre-download drivers in preparation and learnt that, oh yeah, NVIDIA doesn’t support my motherboard’s chipset any more so there are no Vista drivers for it. Fuck you very much, NVIDIA. It’s not even as if it’s that old (maybe a little old).
I couldn’t find any third-party drivers, either, so in the end I just gave up. No Vista for me.
To be honest, that’s probably not a bad thing, y’know?
- Kids, don’t install Vista. ^

Vista
I’m going to try holding off Vista for as long as I can. XP has and does everything I want with no problems - so I don’t see a need to upgrade.

Yeah, Vista is a creaking pile of shit that no-one should be installing, really. I’m just a glutton for punishment.

TBH I wouldn’t be surprised if the whole OS gets binned in the way ‘95 and WinME were. Windows is a bit like Star Trek movies in that regard; they only get it ‘right’ every second release.

You work in IT don’t you? So you SHOULD know that no MS OS is worth your nerves, unless it has at least one Service Pack released.
I’m personally waiting for XP SP3, rather than Vista SP1. Besides, I hear it needs a lot of RAM. While my PC can handle that, I really don’t need all that.
I really envy you people who are not too lazy to code your own CMS. By the way, don’t you get spam? Or the captcha takes care of it?

By the way, don’t you get spam?
Nah. I got httpBL running here so most spambots don’t make it past that. The ones that do get stuck in the CAPTCHA. Been thinking of implementing Akismet instead but… I just don’t want any system I have to actually moderate.
