Young People Are Funny

Wednesday, 10:47 am in Life

I was just thinking, remembering what it was like to be a teenager living with parents. There were all these things you really, really, really wanted to do but couldn’t because you knew your parents wouldn’t approve (even me with my progressive “we-don’t-care-how-you-dress-so-long-as-you-do-it-well” parents). You wanted to dye your hair blue, grow it out, cut it off, have a mowhawk, pierce your ear, pierce your labret, slash holes in your jeans, wear fishnet, go to clubs, drink alcohol, talk to strangers, rule the world.

Then you hit an age and leave home for whatever reason and you still want to do all that stuff, but suddenley there are more important things, like buying food and cleaning the house and all the other stuff you really wanted to do upon moving out comes into a secondary consideration to all the things you need to do to stay alive and out of squalor. I think this is why adults have ‘mid-life crises’ and go out to rediscover their youth. Because by the time your 40-50-ish, you have the skills, resources, money and time to do all the things you really wanted to do when you were young but didn’t.

I think this means I’m damned to a middle age spent in some trendy apartment in Tokyo going to visual kei shows. How depressing…
